Ecom VS SaaS

The other day, I had a subscribe answer my question with this:

I wanna know the difference between ecom email marketing vs saas email marketing

And honestly...

This is a very interesting question

Because on the outside, it doesn't look like there's much difference...

But on the inside?

Two totally different games.

Let me explain...

Both niches do use campaigns/weekly emails and flows/sequences.

But where they differ lies in the setup...

You see, when it comes to ecom... most brands should opt for a 50/50 split of plain text to design emails.

Meaning, they send 2-3 emails a week that are pure copy focused (with content OR direct response...)

And then send 2 design emails (with heavy branding and direct response)

Now from my experience and what I've seen... SaaS business lean more towards the plain text style, some even doing ONLY plain text (with some plain text hybrid emails -- think slight design/images with a ton of copy)

The goals for each niche are the same -- nurture the list and land more sales so there's not much difference there...

BUT, where the big difference comes from is in the flows/sequences.

You see, with ecom, the main focus is to get the prospect to buy something, anything as fast as possible on the front end (which is what the welcome and abandonment series flows are for...

And then cross sell/upsell them on the backend with more advanced flows.

Now for SaaS... the game is slightly different.

Because most SaaS businesses offer free trials to start SO a person opts into their list from the free trial.

Which means the front end of their email needs to be geared towards retaining/getting the person to actually buy the software (after seeing how good it is)

Now that's simple -- all the emails need to do is focus on being as helpful as possible AND provide support.

From there, once the prospect stays on... the rest of the email sequences in place are literally geared towards avoiding churns (so the customers is subscribed for as long as possible)

So yea, that's the basic overview of the key differences... but of course there's a TON of different variables...
